I'm working on a new hat pattern!
I was feeling a little lost at what to do next after releasing the Knarr patterns earlier this year. As the weather started to warm up again, I pulled out my warmer weather clothes which included my Frith Hats and Tops.
Then I remembered last Spring and Summer I had the best time designing and making the Frith Hat and Top.
I wanted to try it again, to see if I could rekindle some of the magic and pull myself out of the Winter slump.
Originally I was thinking about designing something based on dandelions but this piece ran away with me and the stitches decided they had something else in mind!
Last year, I had just come out of a period of time where I was trying to design pieces that were more sedate and basic and I just went nuts with Frith.
All the colours! All the textures! All the stitches!
Maybe it's the Spring and all those flowers bursting out in a riot of colour.
The Frith hat was actually the continuation of an abandoned wip from 2024.
The hat started out as a sun version of my Celestial Hat and I started the three hat crowns above, not quite getting the effect I wanted with any of them.

I started my 4th hat and half way through I realised the crown looked like a seed head.
My sun hat evolved into a sunflower hat. Named for Lord Frith from Watership Down as it reminded me of the sun at the beginning of the animation.
Note the cute little star in the middle of the hat when you use a different colour for the first round!

I was excited to finally find a place to use these whirly elements (shown here in white).
I stopped here and let it sit for almost a year before I picked it up again.
I changed the white part of the hat. These whirls were the best place to use up tiny ends of yarn. And all the other rounds are great for using up slightly longer yarn remnants. The only trouble is all the ends that need weaving in afterwards! I see the ends as a small price to pay for something so beautiful.

Using so many different textures and stitches can take a while.
If I try to finish too fast I run out of fun ideas of what to do next. I want every round to offer something exciting and worth exploring.
Thankfully, the new hat is coming a long a little faster than Frith!

The texture continues all the way down to the brim.
I used yarn left over from one of my Frith Tops to make this first hat. I love the 2 pieces together.
I'm currently working on writing up the pattern and possibly making a matching top!
